Australian cricket icon Brett Lee has paid heartfelt tribute to legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away this week, calling her an artist of “extraordinary talent” and “remarkable humility.”

Posting on Facebook, Lee recalled his memorable collaboration with Bhosle during the recording of You’re the One for Me in 2006 — a cross-cultural duet that blended Indian pop with Western influences.

The song was reportedly written by Lee during the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy in India. In the music video, Lee is trying to impress an Indian girl and Asha Bhosle acts as his advisor.

You’re The One For Me Ft Brett Lee And Asha Bhosale

“I had the pleasure of writing and recording You’re the One for Me with Asha Bhosle back in 2006. It’s something I’ll always be incredibly grateful for,” Lee, who plays in a band called Six & Out, wrote.

“What stayed with me most wasn’t just her extraordinary talent, but how kind and humble she was. For someone who had achieved so much in her life, she carried herself with such warmth and generosity.”

Lee added that his thoughts were with Bhosle’s family and friends, noting: “I feel very fortunate to have shared even a small moment with someone so special. There’s no doubt her legacy will live on for generations to come.”

When Cricket Met Bollywood

Lee’s tribute struck a deep chord across social media.

“Such a beautiful memory shared, Brett. Asha Bhosle’s humility and kindness were as legendary as her voice. Her music will continue to inspire generations, and it’s heartwarming to see how deeply she touched lives across the world,” one social media user responded to Lee’s post.

Another user recollected that the single was a “big hit in India”, and praised Lee for the “very dignified post. You too remain in our heart!”.

The song was released two decades ago, was a treat for both cricket fans and Bollywood enthusiasts, and it further cemented Australia-India relations.

For many Australians, You’re the One for Me offered a glimpse into the vibrant world of Indian film music.

The Voice of Generations

Asha Bhosle, often described as India’s “melody queen,” recorded more than 12,000 songs across multiple Indian languages in a career spanning seven decades. Born in 1933 in a small village in the state of Maharashtra, she rose to international fame through classic Bollywood numbers that defined generations.

Bhosle sang everything from soulful ghazals and romantic duets to disco hits in the 1970s and 1980s. Her collaborations crossed boundaries — performing with artists such as Boy George, The Kronos Quartet, and the Australian cricketer himself.

She was the younger sister of another Indian legend, Lata Mangeshkar, and together the two shaped the sound of Indian cinema for much of the 20th century.

Bhosle received some of India’s highest honours, including the Padma Vibhushan, and was inducted into the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in music history.

A Lasting Legacy

Across India and the Indian diaspora, tributes continue to pour in. In Brett Lee’s words, her music and her kindness “will live on for generations to come.”
