One Killed As Car Rams Into Pedestrians In Melbourne, Werribee Man Arrested

One dead and another critically injured after a car driven by a Weribee man mounted a kerb outside Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday.

A grey Toyota mounted a kerb and struck two pedestrians on Langs Road in Ascot Vale just as people were exiting the Supernova Comic Con & Gaming convention at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday evening. 

A man in his 20s was killed and another was critically injured, Victoria Police said. 

“The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Victoria Police said the collision happened on Langs Road shortly before 5pm. “It is believed a grey Toyota mounted a kerb on Langs Road and struck two pedestrians,” police said. 

“Sadly, one of the pedestrians who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The second pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the police added.

ABC reported that the suspect, a 33-year-old man from Weribee, was “known to the police” and was driving a rental car.

The victim was leaving the Melbourne Show grounds after attending the event with his two friends, when the car struck them.

Supanova Comic Con & Gaming expressed profound sorrow over the fatal crash outside Melbourne Showgrounds.

“We here at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming are deeply saddened and distressed by the incident that occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds this evening,” the organisers said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the unspeakable tragedy that has happened on our doorstep.”

They noted the matter is under police investigation and occurred outside their precinct, adding: “As such, we will not enter into any speculation regarding this appalling situation until all the facts come to light.” Supanova organsiers said that the event will hold a minute’s silence at 10am Sunday “in sympathy and solidarity” with victims’ families and friends before opening to fans.
