7 Major Visa Changes In Australia from July 1, 2025

Australia’s immigration system has undergone a major overhaul effective July 1, 2025, with sweeping changes to skilled migration, student, and family visas.

Key changes include the introduction of the new Skills in Demand visa replacing the Subclass 482, higher salary thresholds for skilled workers, streamlined partner visa processing, and tougher financial requirements for international students.

 Here’s what you need to know:

1. New “Skills in Demand” Visa Replaces Subclass 482

• The Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa is being replaced by the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa, featuring three streams:
  • Core Skills Pathway: For roles on the new Core Skills Occupation List, minimum salary AUD 76,515.
  • Specialist Skills Pathway: For highly paid roles, minimum salary AUD 141,210.
  • Labour Agreements Pathway: For sector-specific agreements.
• Only one year of work experience is now required for sponsorship, down from two years.

2. Higher Salary Thresholds for Skilled Visas

• The minimum salary for the Core Skills stream rises to AUD 76,515 (up from $73,150).
• The Specialist Skills stream now requires at least AUD 141,210 (up from $135,000).
• These increases aim to ensure skilled migrants are paid in line with Australian standards.

3. Employer Sponsorship & Permanent Residency Pathways

• Sponsored workers can now switch employers within 180 days, improving flexibility and mobility.
• The changes will offer clearer pathways to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 TRT visa after two years.
• Under the revised points-based system, skilled visa applicants with five or more years of relevant experience will be awarded 20 points.

4. Occupation Lists Overhauled

• Introduction of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), now with 456 occupations, reviewed regularly to match workforce needs.
• Some roles added (e.g., Data Analyst, Child Care Worker); others removed (e.g., Cafe/Restaurant Manager).

5. Student Visa Changes: Tougher Financial and Fee Requirements

• The financial capacity requirement for student visa applicants rises from AUD 24,505 to AUD 29,710.
• Student visa application fees increase from AUD 1,600 to about AUD 2,000.
• Bachelor’s students can now work 24 hours per week during term (up from 20); postgraduates have unrestricted work rights.
• Australia will limit international student enrollments to 270,000 in 2025 – 145,000 university placements and 95,000 vocational placements.

6. Simplified Family and Partner Visas

• Partner visa applications now use a single-stage process for both temporary and permanent residency, reducing duplication and delays.
• New parent visa options allow three- or five-year stays, with clearer pathways to permanent residency.
• Application fees for partner visas have increased (Subclass 820/801 now costs $9,095).

7. Temporary Graduate Visa (TR 485) Updates

• Age limit reduced to 35 (except for Hong Kong and UK passport holders).
• Visa duration: 3 years for PhD/Master of Research, 2 years for other graduates.
• Higher English language requirements and increased fees (now AUD 2,235).
